How to use it
01
Enter a domain
Type or paste any website address into the checker. Full URLs are fine: we strip out the https://, www. and any page path, so you’re always checking the whole domain.
02
We analyse its link profile
We look at how many websites link to the domain, how trustworthy those linking sites are and how the links are spread across them. Quality counts far more than volume.
03
Get your authority score
You get a score from 0 to 100, the link and traffic metrics behind it, and a benchmark showing how you compare with typical UK small businesses, so you know where you stand among the 5.7 million businesses in the UK.
How does an authority checker work?
An authority checker looks up a domain in a link index: a huge database built by crawlers that continuously scan the web and record which pages link to which. From that index it pulls the domain’s backlink profile, including how many websites link to it, how strong those websites are themselves and how the links are spread across them. It’s a big job: Nominet manages 10.4 million .UK domains alone.
Those signals go through a scoring model that turns them into a single number from 0 to 100. Most authority scales work roughly logarithmically, so climbing from 20 to 30 is far easier than climbing from 70 to 80. Every provider uses its own index and formula, so the score is best used to compare domains within the same tool rather than across different tools.
What is domain authority?
Domain authority is a score from 0 to 100 that predicts how likely a website is to rank in search results. It’s based mainly on how many websites link to it and how trustworthy those websites are. A higher score generally means a stronger, more established domain.
What is a good domain authority score?
It depends on who you’re competing with. Most UK small businesses score between 10 and 30, and that’s often enough to rank for local searches. Compare your score with the sites ranking for your target searches, not with big national brands.
What is the difference between domain authority (DA) and page authority (PA)?
Domain authority scores a whole website, based on the links pointing to every page on the domain. Page authority scores a single page, based mainly on the links pointing to that page. A strong domain can still have weak pages, so page authority is more useful when you’re comparing specific pages that compete for the same search.
Is this domain authority checker free?
Yes. It’s completely free, with no sign-up or card details needed. Check your own site, your competitors or any website you’re thinking of getting a link from.
Can I check domain authority in bulk?
Not at the moment: the checker looks up one domain at a time. If you need authority scores for a long list of domains, for example to vet link-building prospects, get in touch and we can run them for you.
